1958 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia Coupe

Volkswagen Type 1 Karmann Ghias up through 1959 were known as low light Ghias as their headlights were approximately 2 inches lower than subsequent models (the government just helping out in 1960) and thought by many as  enhancing the outstanding Italian Ghia design.

Technically know as a type 1 Karmann Ghia model 143 (LHD Coupe), it is shown here in Bamboo L241 with a dark green roof which I believe is Amazon Green L 417.  Let me know if you know better.

For show, this car has a set of NOS Continental bias ply tires in the proper size.

This particular car is an export model despite the Berchtesgaden Konigssee water decal on the window.

Karmann Ghias were powered by the same 4 cylinder air cooled engines as the Volkswagen cars. In this case the 36 horsepower used in 1958.

Only 13,782 of these coupes were made and not many have survived. Since there are no visible seams in the body, any damage had to be properly repaired by craftsmen experienced in welding and using lead. Damage to this beautiful nose was particularly difficult to properly repair. As these cars became just "old cars" many were junked rather than being repaired.

Here are two examples of 1958 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia sales literature that you would have found in the dealer's showroom.
